The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have authorized and recommended booster vaccine shots to those who have been fully vaccinated with the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.
Additionally, individuals are now able to receive any brand of COVID-19 vaccine for their booster shot.
Whether or not you should get a booster dose depends upon the vaccine you received previously, and your age, medical conditions and occupational risk.
Pfizer and Moderna
For individuals who received a Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the following groups are eligible for a booster shot at 6 months or more after their initial series:
- 65 years and older
- Age 18+ who live in long-term care settings
- Age 18+ who have underlying medical conditions
- Age 18+ who work or live in high-risk settings
Johnson & Johnson
All 18 and older and who were vaccinated two or more months ago may receive a booster shot. Please note that Tryon is not presently distributing the Johnson & Johnson for first dose or booster vaccinations.

First and second doses of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine are also available.
Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 is still the best way to avoid severe illness due to COVID-19, especially the highly contagious Delta variant. It might cause more severe illness (hospital stays and deaths) than previous strains, especially in unvaccinated persons. Unvaccinated people are eight times more likely to get sick and are 25 times more likely to be hospitalized or die.
Tryon is also scheduling appointments for those who are not yet fully vaccinated to receive their first or second dose appointments of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine. Everyone ages 12 and older is eligible to receive the vaccine.
